YouTuber Mmiisas’ video on UN’s goals

The 2030 Sustainable Development Goals are a positive example of what the world can accomplish by working together. In September, the matter is debated in the UN and on social media influencer's channels.

Even though the COVID-19 pandemic has complicated both international cooperation and civic participation, virtual forums are active. The Global Goals Week will be launched on Friday 18 September in parallel with the ongoing UN General Assembly to accelerate the world's common Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.

In Finland, YouTuber Mmiisas discusses the UN’s goals on a video on her YouTube channel.  Mmiisas, alias Miisa Rotola-Pukkila, cooperates with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and, focusing on young people’s perspective, looks into what the world could be like in 2030. This is the year by which the SDGs should have been achieved, that is, ten years from now. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, work for the common goals is now even more critical than before.

“I think it’s very cool that this sort of action plan exists. It gives hope to the world especially at this point when we're in the middle of this crisis. You may feel that ten years is a long time in your own life, but it’s a short one for the world. In any case, I look at this trustfully: if you think about it, many good things have happened in the past ten years”, Miisa says.

“For example, I didn’t know that around the time when I was born, more than 100 million young women were illiterate, but today the number has almost halved. This is amazing, isn't’ it! In addition, a great many more people have access to clean water today.”

Ideas from around the world

Miisa asked youth from the other side of the globe to tell her about their hopes for the future. The letters she received made her wonder how different goals and restrictions young people can have depending on their living conditions and on where they live.

“Reading those letters was an eye-opening experience for me as while I myself am dreaming of self-development in working life and living abroad, there are also young people that may be dreaming of the right to choose their partner or to study.

Later this autumn, she will tell about the hopes and dreams of her Finnish YouTube followers and examine in more detail what Finland is doing in the world to support the UN’s goals.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals and 2030 Agenda aim to eradicate poverty and to safeguard prosperity in an environmentally sustainable manner. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was adopted in 2015, concerns all countries of the world and obligates them to promote sustainable development both nationally and globally. Its 17 SDGs are due to be met by 2030.
