In connection with the UN General Assembly, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development of Finland Anne-Mari Virolainen will host an event where the particular focus is on climate change adaptation and the sustainable use of natural resources from the perspective of women. Adapting to Climate Change event takes place on 27 September, and it is organised together with Tanzania, Costa Rica, UN Women, UN Convention on Combating Desertification (UNCCD) and Green Climate Fund (GCF).
The purpose of the interactive event is to discuss how climate change impacts on gender equality and peace and security. The key questions are why women’s participation in decision-making on environmental and climate issues is so important, and how their participation contributes to the empowerment of women and gender equality in general. Among the topics are also the linkages between unsustainable use of lands and forests and climate change and local and international conflicts.
About 150 people from the governments of different countries and from international organizations, associations, companies and research institutes are expected to attend the event. Besides Minister Virolainen, the speakers at the event include the UNCCD Executive Secretary Monique Barbut, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Petteri Taalas, UN Women Deputy Executive Director Åsa Regnér, GCF Deputy Executive Director Javier Manzanare and Gun Lidestav from the international Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO).
