Europe Day discussions cover on EU and NATO as builders of security

Eurooppa-päivää vietetään 9. toukokuuta. Tänä vuonna Eurooppa-päivän päätapahtuma järjestetään Helsingin keskustakirjasto Oodissa ja verkossa. Ohjelmassa on laaja kattaus ajankohtaisia keskusteluja Suomen ja Euroopan tulevaisuudesta. Osana päivän ohjelmaa ulkoministeriön Eurooppatiedotus järjestää avoimen keskustelutilaisuuden ”Miten EU ja Nato rakentavat Euroopan turvallisuutta?”.

What does the EU mean for Finland’s security? Will anything change now that Finland is a member of NATO? How are the EU and NATO working together? The event, held in the Maijasali Hall on the first floor of Oodi, will start at 14.00 on 9 May. The speakers will be Piritta Asunmaa, Director General of the Political Department of the Foreign Ministry, and Minna Ålander, Research at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs. Europe Day, held on 9 May every year, marks the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. The French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman held a speech in Paris in 1950, setting out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable. Schuman’s proposal is considered the beginning of what is now the European Union. Europe Day celebrates peace and unity in Europe.
