Sahel is one of the fastest growing refugee crises in the world. At the same time, it is one of the most forgotten humanitarian crises. Instability is rooted in poor social and economic conditions. Poor food security is testing vast areas. The situation in Sahel is further aggravated by extreme climate conditions, rapid population growth and COVID-19. The State’s presence is lacking in extensive areas. Violence has forced millions of to flee from their homes. The challenging situation in the Sahel region (Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Tshad) has a direct impact on the security of the EU’s neighbouring areas, the EU and, consequently, Finland. UNHCR provides shelter and emergency relief supplies and supports victims of increased sexual and gender-based violence.
