Education Cannot Wait/contribution to the fund
Description
Climate change, natural disasters, wars, protracted conflicts, and the resulting refugee crisis affect the wellbeing of children and young people in many ways. In crises, it may not be possible to go to school at all, or school attendance may be disrupted. According to a new global assessment 222 million children living in crisis areas need support to continue their schooling and learning. Only approximately 2-4% of global humanitarian funding has been allocated to education. Education Cannot Wait (ECW) is the UN Global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crisis. Its mission is to strengthen political commitment and increase financing to education in emergencies and protracted crisis and it operates in the intersection of the development and humanitarian nexus. The goal of ECW’s new strategy (2023-2026) is that children and adolescents affected by crises realize their right to safe, gender-equitable, and inclusive quality education and achieve holistic learning outcomes. This includes both increased and more equitable participation in education, and increased learning and well-being. During the strategy period of 2023-2026 ECW aims to directly reach 20 million children with education support. In addition, it aims to strengthen coordination, capacities and systems to respond to the educational needs of the 222 million crisis affected children and youth.
