INT/Nordic Africa Institute

The Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) provides a combination of high-quality research, skilled communication and policy dialogue and an extensive library collection on contemporary Africa. It is based in Uppsala, Sweden. The Institute also promotes equal North-South-North exchange and cooperation through cooperation, contacts and exchanges between Nordic and African scholars. The strategic goals for the Institute in 2017-2021 are: 1) Promote support and encourage academic and policy-relevant research; 2) Support positive development in African countries based on North-South and South-North dialogue; 3) Contribute to the Africa policy agenda in the Nordic countries; 4) Building capacity in the production of knowledge about Africa; 5) Secure and diversify the Institute's resources; and 6) Be a values-based organisation. The research agenda includes five thematic areas: 1) Economic growth and challenges of inequality and poverty; 2) Climate change and sustainable development; 3) Mobility and migration; 4) Conflict, security and democratic transformation; and 5) Gender equality. The Institute's budget for the years 2018-2019 is approximately 77,9 million SEK (approximately 7,65 million EUR), and Finland´s funding for that period is 400 000 EUR. The implementation of the strategy proceeded as planned in 2017. The Institute collaborated extensively with academic and research organisations and networks in Africa as well as built new partnerships. It hired new researchers and hosted several visiting researchers from Africa and the Nordic countries. The Institute published new publications and manuscripts and it finalized a digitalization project of Tanzanian archives. It also organized several events in Sweden, Finland and Iceland e.g. related to policy advice. The Institute's visibility on media significantly increased in 2017 especially in Sweden. The Institute's activities contribute indirectly to poverty reduction. The support to the Institute is 100% ODA eligible.
