INT/WTO Trade-related technical assistance
Description
The World Trade Centre (WTO) is an intergovernmental organization that regulates multilateral trade. Trade-related Technical Assistance (TRTA) is a core function of the WTO. Its purpose is to enhance the capacity of developing countries to take full advantage of the rules-based Multilateral Trading System (MTS). An independent external evaluation on WTO's TRTA published in 2017 finds convincing evidence that the agencies support has been effective in building capacity of developing country members to work with multilateral trade rules and negotiations. Finland's support is channeled to three trust funds in the WTO: (i) Doha Development Agenda Global Trust Fund (DDA GTF),that builds developing countries capacity to negotiate, implement and make full use of the Multilateral Trading System; (ii) Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF), that aims to strengthen developing countries capacity in sanitary and phytosanitary standards (SPS), and (iii) Trade Facilitation Agreement Facility (TFAF), that supports developing countries to implement the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement. Finland's support to the WTO is 1.7 million euros from 2017 funds. The funds are allocated to the DDA GTF (1 million euros), STDF (0.5 million euros) and TFAF (0.2 million euros). Finland's funding contributes mainly towards the implementation of WTO's biennial technical assistance plan starting in 2018.
