UNHCR/humanitarian aid to Ukraine
Description
Humanitarian aid to Ukraine via UNHCR, the UN agency responsible for refugees. The United Nations and the government of Ukraine published, on 14 August, a joint Preliminary Response Plan, which aims at responding especially to the humanitarian needs of the victims of the violent conflict in East Ukraine. To carry out the plan, UN agencies need a total of 33,3 mln USD (some 25 million euros), of which UNHCR accounts to a third. There were 155 800 internally displaced persons (IDP) in Ukraine by 18 August, of whom 85% had fled East Ukraine. UNHCR helps to assess the needs of the IDPs together with the Ukrainian authorities, UN and non-governmental organizations, delivers humanitarian aid to the most vulnerable and helps the government to create new legislation to protect the IDPs.
