General Education Quality Improvement Program for Equity

Description

Ethiopia allocates a significant part of the government's budget (approximately 25%) to education sector. Under the enormous pressure to expand the education, Ethiopia needs support to ensure quality of education and to enhance equity. General Education Quality Improvement Programme for Equity (GEQIP -E) is an independent Programme, which is based on the achievements of the phases one and two of the GEQIP programme. GEQIP programmes are based on the objectives of the Ethiopian Education Sector Programme (ESDP). GEQIP-E supports the quality improvement of general education, but emphasizes more equity compared to the previous phases of the GEQIP. Support to strengthened equity focuses especially to disabled, girls and emerging regions. Ministry of Education in Ethiopia is in charge of the project implementation. The World Bank administers funds with Multi Donor Trust Fund to which Finland will pay its support. The Program Development Objective is to improve internal efficiency, equitable access and quality in general education. The result areas are: 1) Improved Internal Efficiency 2) Improved Equity 3) Improved Quality and 4) System Strengthening. Financing is conditioned to specific results in these result areas. The Programme is implemented 2018-2022. The budget is 440 million dollars, from which 420 is allocated to the result areas. Moreover, 20 million dollars from the World Bank loan will be used to technical assistance. Finland will support the GEQIP-E Programme with 16,9 million euros . The support will be given during 4 years.
