FAO/Towards Sustainable Aquaculture and Fisheries Development in the Kyrgyz Republic

Description

The aquaculture and fisheries development project implemented by FAO (2009-2017) has been granted extension funding of € 700.000 for years 2018 - 2019. The project is carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Industries and Meliorations of Kyrgyz Republic. The project trains actors in the fisheries sector, promotes research and management of the field and develops fish processing and fish marketing. The objective of the project is to promote sustainable fisheries sector and to strengthen the right to food, sources of livelihood and employment opportunities, especially for poor rural areas in the Kyrgyz Republic. The fish farmer’s associations established in the project are supported for the establishment of distribution chains for fish products, fish seed and fish feed. Beneficiaries of the project are the Department of Livestock and Fisheries as well as Farmer’s Associations and families. The population of the country also benefits from the development of a more profitable and sustainable aquaculture sector, the growth in employment and additional income. The most important achievements of the project so far are established fisheries sector curriculum for the University of Agriculture, four hatcheries and three small-scale fish production sites and strengthened research activities in the fisheries sector. It also should be noted that during the project period, fish production in Kyrgyz Republic has increased significantly, the increase represents a five-fold increase in just five years. The next phase of the project (2018-2019) aims to strengthen the results already achieved and thus ensure long-term sustainability of the project. The activities focus particularly on supporting the established associations. The main objectives of the follow-up phase are: 1. The sustainability of fish farming associations is strengthened by enhancing the fish farmers business and operational capacity and understanding of the entire value chain. 2. The breeding and marketing capacities and the fish processing skills of the associations will be strengthened 3. Fish health monitoring methods and biosafety are developed to ensure production 4. The capacity of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Industries and Meliorations will be strengthened to implement the Aquaculture and Fisheries Development Strategy (2017-2025).
