Core Support to UN Women Afghanistan

Afghanistan is one of the least developed countries in the world and ranks the lowest in gender equality indexes. The humanitarian and socio-economic situation further deteriorated after the Taliban took power in August 2021. Finland has been committed to the stabilization of Afghanistan and in particular to the enhancement of women’s rights for more than twenty years. It is important that international community, including Finland, continue to support Afghan women and girls during these difficult times. The promotion of the rights of women and girls is a central foreign policy goal of Finland and assistance provided through UN Women in Afghanistan contributes to this goal. Country level funding also complements the global level funding that Finland provides to UN Women. The implementation of global level policies takes place at the country level, where the progress can be monitored and advocacy goals followed-up. The role of UN Women to Afghan women in Afghanistan is of utmost importance. The organization has been able to continue its work by adjusting and its presence provides hope for Afghan women and girls. The country office is the largest of UN Women’s country offices and it is planned to expand further in order to respond to the enormous needs of Afghan women and girls. UN Women supports women and civil society organizations directly. No support nor funding goes to the de facto authorities. The focus of UN Women in Afghanistan is to promote access to essential services, humanitarian assistance, livelihoods and income opportunities. UN Women supports civil society and women’s agency, and generates knowledge and research of the situation, echoing the voices and views of Afghan women both in Afghanistan and internationally. UN Women also provides technical expertise and advice to the UN System and international community to keep gender equality and women’s rights at the forefront of all the work and decisions making concerning Afghanistan. The budget estimate for UN Women Country Office’s Strategic Note 2023-2025 is 57-60 million US dollars annually. However, if the resource mobilization will not result in a fully funded programme, the budget will be revisited. Finland contributes 2,1 million euros to the implementation of UN Women’s country programme in 2023-2024.
