Finland reaffirms its support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity on the anniversary of the conflict in Georgia

"Finland reaffirms its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia. In accordance with international law, the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia belong to Georgia. International relations must be grounded on rules-based cooperation and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. It is important that a peaceful resolution be sought for the conflict in Georgia," says Minister for Foreign Affairs Timo Soini.

Finland will continue its support for the peaceful resolution of the conflict through the Geneva International Discussions and its engagement in the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia. Finland has contributed monitors to the mission since its establishment. The conflict is not over. Finland considers it vital that the ceasefire agreement negotiated in August 2008 be respected. Russia should withdraw its armed troops from Abkhazia and South Ossetia in compliance with international commitments.

Finland is committed to the EU's joint declaration(Link to another website.), issued by High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini on 7 August 2018.
