UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi to visit Finland
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, will visit Finland on 19 September and discuss the current humanitarian and refugee situation with Finland’s political leadership.
During his visit, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Grandi will meet President of the Republic Alexander Stubb, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio. High Commissioner Grandi will also meet the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament and representatives of Finnish civil society organisations.
The focus of the meetings will be on the global humanitarian and refugee situation and topical matters in Europe. The meetings will also discuss the relations between the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and Finland, cooperation with the private sector and the importance of helping those in a particularly vulnerable situation.
“Finland’s humanitarian assistance prioritises helping those in the most vulnerable situations. In our decisions on humanitarian funding in 2024, we have focused on supporting the provision of humanitarian assistance in the world’s largest refugee crises. The UNHCR is one of the main recipients of our humanitarian funding, and Finland will continue to support the organisation to ensure that aid will reach those most in need,” says Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Tavio.
The UNHCR provides vital assistance and protection to refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons and stateless persons across the world. It is one of the world’s largest humanitarian organisations. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi has led the organisation since 2016.
