Advance information on discretionary government grants for civil society organisations’ communications and global education projects for 2021–2022

On 30 September 2020, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs will open a call for applications for communications and global education projects by Finnish civil society organisations for the period of 2021-2022. The call is open until 16 November 2020. The call for applications will also include a targeted application round for operating grants for Finnish civil society organisations with UN background. The call for applications, including the application criteria, will be published at the end of September. The granted support is part of the budget for development cooperation undertaken by civil society organisations.

Civil society organisations’ communications and global education projects are an integral part of Finland’s development cooperation activities. The form of support is used to finance projects aimed at raising awareness of development issues among Finnish people and involving citizens in development cooperation. The support will contribute to the implementation of the goals of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to strengthening global partnership and global responsibility in Finland. In particular, the grants will focus on promoting target 4.7 of the Agenda, which aims to ensure that everyone has the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development.

Government grants can be applied for new communications and global education projects for the years 2021–2022. The project support is not permanent funding but a fixed-term additional contribution to raise awareness of developing countries' perspectives and development issues and to promote global responsibility among Finnish people.

Support will be granted for three types of projects:

  • Communications projects
National or regional communications projects that raise awareness of the 2030 Agenda, Finland’s development policy and global development issues.
  • Educational projects
Projects aimed at schools and adult education that support global education and education for sustainable development.
  • Corporate responsibility projects
Projects that raise awareness among the public and key stakeholders and increase their activities for corporate responsibility as part of global sustainable development.

In connection with the call for applications, a targeted application round for operating grants will also be opened for Finnish civil society organisations with UN background for the period of 2021–2022.

The call for applications for communications and global education projects will take place from 30 September to 16 November 2020. Applications and their appendices should be submitted via the Foreign Ministry’s e-Service by 16 November 2020 at 16.15 at the latest.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs will publish more information on its website (um.fi) on 30 September 2020, including a call for applications, detailed application criteria and application instructions with relevant forms.  The call for applications will specify an exact time and e-mail address for submitting questions.
